Information
EQOS Energie has made an important contribution to modernising the railway line between Klagenfurt and Weizelsdorf, thereby assisting the decarbonisation of Austrian rail traffic. The company was tasked by ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG with building foundations for and positioning 300 masts along the 12-kilometre rail section.
Initially, pile foundation work was executed using pile-driving techniques. Some of this effort proved to be very challenging, both for pile driving and mast positioning. Preliminary exploratory work had revealed that some special foundations were needed in some places due to the rocky ground. Some masts had to be anchored directly in the rocks. Up to 12 of the company’s own fitters and civil engineering experts from partner companies were deployed. EQOS Energie contributed special expertise in operating the pile driver, setting up the buckets, operating the track vehicles (specifically the rail crane) and setting up the masts.
Special attention was devoted to logistics. For instance, any transportation of construction machinery, mixing vehicles, delivery and removal of construction supplies and excavated material was track-bound only, since there are no access roads to the tracks in some cases. The masts and buckets were also delivered in freight cars and transported by rail to their respective construction sites. Since the line is single track only, the arrivals and departures had to be coordinated precisely.
