The ‘Invalidenstraße’ project will extend the tram line from the North to South railway station. The line runs through the city centre and is one of the main accesses to Berlin main railway station. The many underground transmission lines posed a particular challenge, resulting in micropiles being used for 10 of the foundations.
The aim was to improve communication between the main railway hub and the public transport network to ease travel and save time for passengers in Berlin.
This was achieved over the linkage of the double-track tram overhead line system to Bernauer Straße and the double-track extension of this line to Invalidenstraße. The new catenary system was a weight-tensioned construction. The first 100 m after the Chausseestraße/Invalidenstraße junction was built with three tracks. The two sidings at the turning loop were equipped with a single post-tensioned catenary line. The tram line went into service in two phases: in 2013 Chausseestraße to Alt Moabit went into operation, in 2015 the connection in the Nordbahnhof direction.
