Pile foundations and mast positioning at the Linz town harbour

Information

On behalf of ÖBB Infrastruktur AG, EQOS Energie has constructed the mast sites for the comprehensive electrification of the shunting yard at the Linz town harbour. Thanks to this project, the shunting yard is now also fully accessible for environmentally friendly electric locomotives. A total of nine railway lines or 10 railway kilometres were affected by the construction measures during which pile foundations were built and masts were positioned. In addition, the railway lines were equipped with 100 catenary line masts. During construction, the freight yard maintained full operations so that a close logistic coordination with ÖBB Infrastruktur AG was required.

The majority of the foundations used were pile foundations, since these can be used more efficiently than regular concrete foundations: As soon as the steel buckets are driven in, they can be used for the further working steps. In contrast, concrete foundations require lengthy processing. As a result, it was possible to immediately insert the catenary line masts into the steel buckets, thereby significantly shortening the work time. This immediately enabled the subsequent fitting
of the 15-kV catenary line system required for powering the electric locomotives.

A total of 15 employees of EQOS Energie worked on the mast sites every day. A so-called caterpillar piling rig was used for the rail-bound generation of the driven pile foundations. Then the masts were erected with a specialised crane vehicle that was also rail-bound.
